FOOD INDUSTRY GROWS RAPIDLY, THE EXPORTS INCREASE

Turkey is one of the few self sufficient countries in the world in food production. It is the biggest agricultural products producer and exporter in Middle East and North Africa regions in the last years. The total agricultural and food products export of Turkey in 2006 that is equal to the 9% of the total exportation of Turkey is 7,7 billion $ in 2006.






THE INTEREST OF FOREIGN INVESTORS IN MILK AND MILK PRODUCTS IS INCREASING
Although the small family enterprises are more common in the production structure in the sector, the investments in milk and milk by-products is increasing lately and the number of integrated facilities increase.   The fact that the consumption rate of milk and milk by-products is very low when compared to developed countries increase the interest of foreign investors.

THE PRODUCT VARIETY INCREASES CONSUMPTION
Lately, the producers have started to serve the market new and special products to increase the consumption habits.  The traditional products (ayran, yogurt, cream and traditional cheeses) are possessed by traditional methods and marketed.  Additionally, the milk products that are commonly consumed in the western countries (such as fruit, probiotic yogurt, mozzarella cheese) are commonly produced in our country lately.

BIG COMPETITION IN THE ICE CREAM MARKET
The foreign capital companies are dominant in the market and because the market is not saturated yet, the local companies speed up their investments too.



THE CONSUMPTION OF MEAT AND MEAT PRODUCTS IS VERY LIMITED.

Although our country has so many geographical advantages for small cattle and great cattle, winged animals, fishery products and fishes, we are very far behind the developed countries especially in consumption of fish and red meat.

Approximately 80% of the white meat of chicken and turkey that is a source of cheap protein in our country is produced in integrated facilities and the latest technology is used in these facilities in accordance with the latest developments in the world. 

The demand for packaged meat and meat products that serve advantages of freshness and hygiene is increasing day by day.














THE TRANSFER FROM TRADITIONAL METHODS TO MODERN TECHNOLOGY IN BREAD PRODUCTION HAS BEEN ACCELERATED. 
The consumption of bread is continuously increasing because bread is the basic food in our country.   In the latest years, transfer from traditional production methods to modern technology has been accelerated.  Especially the increase in the variety of breads for healthy nutrition and the increase of the importance of packaged bread for hygienic reasons caused the usage of the latest technology in the phases of bread from production to the consumer. 

THE CANDY, CHOCOLATE PRODUCTS, CAKE, BISCUIT INDUSTRIES INCREASE WİTH INVESTMENTS
The candy, chocolate and cacao products, cake and biscuit sectors have made great progress in Turkish food industry by technological developments and the investments that are increasing in the last years.
A different production line is being used for every product in enterprises that use modern production technology.


THE GIANTS THAT MAKE HUGE INVESTMENTS IN DRINKING AND MINERAL WATER MARKETS ARE RACING.
Although our country has rich sources of drinking and mineral waters, the consumption of bottled and packaged water and mineral water is below the desired level. In the last years, especially by the investments of the world’s leading foreign capital companies such as Coca Cola, Nestle and Pepsi Cola and the variety of products (such as fruit drinking and mineral water) made a serious growth expectation in the market.

THE DEVELOPED TECHNOLOGIES ARE USED IN FRUIT JUICES AND CARBONATED SOFT DRINKS.
The facts that both Turkey is one of the leading raw fruit producers in the world and that it is near to the target markets give advantages to the producer companies, most of these companies use developed technologies for both fruit process lines and for bottling lines.  The production is made by the use of modern technologies in the carbonated soft drinks sector in which also foreign partnered companies activate in, the cola drinks are produced the most and fruit and aromatic drinks follow these.

THE GOVERNMENTAL MONOPOLY IN THE ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES HAS ENDED, THE VARIETY AND USAGE OF PRODUCTS HAS INCREASED. 
The governmental monopoly in the production of some alcoholic beverages has ended within the framework of harmonization studies with the European Union and new companies and products entered the market. The great increases in the tourism sector have also positively effected the production of especially beer and wine.

 













WE HAVE MADE A WORD RECORD IN ANNUAL GROWTH IN FUNCTIONAL FOODS.
The functional food sector that is defined as the foods that give health benefits in additional to basic nutrition has made a word record by having a growth of 40% in 2006.  The growth average of the last tree years is 25%. The facts like that the number of the players in the market are continuously increasing and that a new products are served every new day gives the signal that the growth shall continue.
